800 itemsCorrespondence, manuscripts, documents, and printed materials relating to the history of the Leĭb Gvardiĭ Pervyĭ Strelkovoĭ Polk (First Rifle Regiment of the Imperial Guard) and its emigre veterans' group, Obe̋dinenie Ofit︠s︡erov Pervogo Strelkovogo Polka (Union of Officers of the First Rifle Regiment of the Imperial Guard). Correspondence includes letters from members of the Union, and letters to the union on the occasion of the Regiment's 75th and 100th jubilees (1931, 1956). Among the manuscripts are autobiographies and memoirs of members of the Union, touching on such topics as the history of the Regiment and its service in World War I. There are a few items from the period of World I and the Civil War, but almost the entire collection dates from the 1920s to the 1950s.

Nearly all the manuscripts are by Savit︠s︡kiĭ himself, and include essays on such topics as Suvorov and Napoleon Bonaparte, Pushkin, early foreign travelers in Russia, eternal youth, Russian art and engineering. There are subject files relating to Savit︠s︡kiĭ's father, Kazimir Antonovich Savit︠s︡kiĭ, who was chairman of the Severskiĭ Donet︠s︡ Railroad from about 1907 to 1920, and to the Obshchestvo li︠u︡biteleĭ russkoĭ voennoĭ stariny (Society of Russian Military History Enthusiasts), a Paris based emigre organization. The printed materials include clippings and several issues of "Russkiĭ Voenno-Istoricheskiĭ Vestnik" of which Savit︠s︡kiĭ was co-editor.

Although the regiment was founded in 1806, almost all the materials date from the 20th century. The voluminous correspondence largely consists of letters to Dmitriĭ I. Khodnev and leaders of the regimental association in the emigration. Manuscripts include a long memoir by Khodnev concerning his service in the regiment

Semenovskii Polk Records, 1720-1967
7500 itemsThe bulk of the collection concerns the last three decades of the Regiment's existence and the emigration. Cataloged items consist of 3 photographs of Tsar Nicholas II and a receipt signed by one Captain Lanta, dated 1720. The correspondence is almost all after 1917. The manuscripts include a history of the Regiment from its formation and some other historical pieces by Viktor I. Meshchaninov. Most of the other manuscripts -- chiefly officers' memoirs -- concern the period of WWI, the Revolution, and the Civil War. Of other materials relating to the Imperial epoch, mention may be made of the lists of members of the Regiment since its formation compiled by some regimental historian; biographical sketches of many officers; field orders, topographical maps, certificates awarding medals, etc. The Association of former officers generated much material: accounts, minutes, souvenirs of commemorative dinners, etc. A rich store of photographs forms part of the collection. These include both individual and group portraits of members of the Regiment and of the Imperial family. Especially fine photos of the last 2 tsars, their families, and various urban landscapes are found in the album "Photographies du comte Nostitz.".
Gleb Alekseevich Benzeman Papers, 1930-1977

There are two letters and typescripts on such themes as military education before World War I, the Benzeman family, and the kidnapping of General A. P. Kutepov in 1930. Also included are a pamphlet entitled "Imperator Nikolai II" (no author, published in Germany in 1948), and a binder entitled "Iz krasivogo proshlogo imperatorskoi Rossii" consisting of clippings of articles written by Benzeman.
