Leopold Eidlitz architectural drawings and papers, 1852-1895

Included are 60 photographs, approximately half of which show architectural drawings and models of the New York State Capitol at Albany, and views of the Capitol under construction, circa 1860s-1880s. These primarily show the work of Eidlitz, Richardson and Company, who designed the Capitol. Projects of Fuller and Laver and I. G. Perry for the Capitol are also depicted. The rest of the photographs show other projects by Leopold Eidlitz and his firm including the American Exchange Bank, New York City, 1857; Broadway Tabernacle, New York City, 1859; the Continental Bank, New York City, 1856; the Cooper Union, New York City, circa 1886; Dry Dock Savings Bank, New York City, 1875; and Temple Emanu-El, New York City, 1868. Also, unidentified buildings, and buildings by other architects, including Cyrus W. Eidlitz (Association of the Bar of New York, Main Library, New York City, 1895), and Robert H. Robertson (Phillips Presbyterian Church, New York City, 1874). Two original drawings by Eidlitz of Christ Church, St. Louis, Missouri, circa 1859, and a competition design for the New York City Crystal Palace, circa 1852.

This collection included primarily original and reprographic architectural drawings by Roth, circa 1907-circa 1949, largely of apartment buildings located in Manhattan and designed during the 1920s and 1930s. Represented are the San Remo Towers, The Beresford, The Oliver Cromwell, the Normandy, and numerous other apartment buildings. There are also drawings for several hotel and private residences. A two-volume typescript autobiography is also included.

A 1956 proposal drafted by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill for the Union Carbide Building, a historically significant, mid-twentieth century office tower located at 270 Park Avenue, just north of Grand Central Station. The proposal consists of reproductions of plan and elevation drawings and photographs of the Union Carbide model, together with outline specifications, cost estimates, and construction and drawing schedules.

New York Chamber of Commerce building architectural records, 1883-1976

This collection includes original and reprographic architectural, engineering, and interior decoration drawings for the New York Chamber of Commerce building at 65 Liberty Street in New York City. 225 drawings date from the original design and construction of the building in 1901-1902, and 206 date from alterations and additions in 1921. The remaining drawings relate to additonal minor alterations and repairs to the structure, some as late as 1976. A very small amount of correspondence is also included in this collection. There is one drawing by Charles William Clinton for an unidentified building, stamped 1883, that may document an earlier building occupied by the New York Chamber of Commerce.

Harvey Wiley Corbett (1873-1954) was an American architect primarily active in New York City but also completed projects across the United States and in London. While known for his work on early skyscraper architecture, his work also includes banks, churches, educational campuses, government buildings, housing projects, and large memorial projects like the George Washington Masonic National Memorial (Alexandria, VA). His most well-known projects include Rockefeller Center (Corbett served as a senior architect on the project), the Criminal Courts Building (Centre Street, NY), and Bush Tower (East 42nd Street, NY). Alongside his prolific career, Corbett was also engaged in the theoretical elements of the evolving American city. This can been seen through his commissioning of Hugh Ferriss for the creation of the set of drawings now known as the "Metropolis of Tomorrow," which questioned the results of the contemporary zoning laws of New York City. This collection reflects the breadth of Corbett's work and interests and while it primarily consists of photographs of his many projects, the collection also encompasses a small portion of professional papers and reference material. Beyond the bulk of photographs, there are drawings, correspondence, notes, clippings, postcards, daily calendar entries, a portfolio, photo albums, publications, and financial and legal records.

Robert Allan Jacobs (1905-1993) was an American architect and designer active in the United States from the 1930s until his retirement in the early 1980s. His work consists primarily of commercial projects, including numerous skyscrapers in New York City, along with a richly varied corpus of other institutional, residential, and commercial projects--primarily centered in New York City and its surrounding suburbs but ranging as far afield as South Africa and the Dominican Republic. The son of the notable Beaux-Arts architect Harry Allan Jacobs, Robert Allan Jacobs was educated at Amherst College and the Columbia University School of Architecture. Jacobs began his career as a disciple of Le Corbusier, went on to serve as a designer and draftsman for Harrison & Fouilhoux, and then formed a partnership with Ely Jacques Kahn in 1941--thus commencing three decades of pioneering collaborative design work that would leave an indelible mark on the Manhattan skyline. Together, Kahn & Jacobs made their debut with the Municipal Asphalt Plant in 1941 and went on to design such iconic projects as 100 Park Avenue (1944), the Universal Pictures Building (1947), 1407 Broadway (1950), 425 Park Avenue (1957), the Seagram Building (in collaboration with Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson, 1958), the Astor Plaza Building (in collaboration with Carson & Lundin, 1961), the New York Telephone Building (1969), and One Astor Place (1970).

This collection contains approximately 5100 drawings, including preliminary design drawings and unbuilt studies, presentation drawings, and working drawings, for more than 100 individual projects designed by Philip Johnson, some in collaboration with John Burgee. Locations include the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Israel, and Venezuela. Major commissions included in this collection are the Glass House in New Canaan, CT; the New York State Pavilion for the 1964 World's Fair, Queens, NY; the New York State Theater at Lincoln Center, NYC; Asia House, NYC; the H.L. Moses Building at Montefiore Hospital, Bronx, NY; the master plan for Welfare Island, NYC; the Munson-Williams Proctor Institute, Utica, NY; the Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, TX; and buildings for Sarah Lawrence College, Seton Hill College, the University of St. Thomas, and Yale University. Also of note in this collection are many presentation renderings by Helmut Jacoby and other architectural renderers. A subset of this collection includes drawings created for the 1996 monograph on Philip Johnson by Peter Blake.

Drawings are signed by Joseph Newton, James C. Lawrence, Henry Hedley, a Mr. Whiteman, T.G. Vandenheuvel. Drawings are largely unsigned. Among structures represented are Washington Hall, on Broadway, New York, undated, unsigned; "A plan of a roof sent to Philadelphia for the circus" undated, unsigned; and City Hall, New York, undated.
