The files deal largely with Keppel's personal and professional life during his tenure as President of the Carnegie Corporation, and also include some files from his years as Newton D. Baker's Third Assistant Secretary of War, and as Dean of Columbia College. There are extensive files of correspondence from and to Keppel's parents and children, as well as files concerning his activities in organizations such as the Century and Columbia University Clubs. The letters from friends and business associates concern American education, politics, business, and cultural life, particularly in the New York metropolitan area, from 1900 to 1943.

Correspondence, manuscripts, typescripts, notes, reports, memoranda, documents, and printed materials relating to Friess' dual career. The correspondence files include letters from professors of religion and philosophy at Columbia and other universities; from his students; letters dealing with Columbia academic matters; letters with related reports and memoranda concerning his membership in the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion and the American Council of Learned Societies Committee on the History of Religion, the latter concerned with lectures on Chinese religions by Wing-Tsit Chan in 1950 and on Islam by Louis Massignon in 1952. The academic writings of Friess consist of manuscripts, typescripts, manuscript notes, course materials, and other items relating to his teaching, research, publishing and other activities and associations at Columbia. Religion and philosophy are the chief topics, particularly German philosophy. There are numerous manuscripts submitted to Friess by colleagues and students, including three lengthy ones by Dr. Arno Carl Coutinho.

Letters, manuscripts, documents, and letterbooks of Jay and of many members of his family. The letters touch on every aspect of American life and government of the period, and contain correspondence from such prominent individuals as John Adams, George Clinton, James Duane, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, Rufus King, John Paul Jones, Marquis de Lafayette, Robert B. Livingston, William Livingston, Gouverneur Morris, Robert Morris, Edmund Randolph, Philip Schuyler, and George Washington. There are approximately 500 letters from Jay, primarily drafts of correspondence to the persons listed above, as well as his correspondence as Secretary of Foreign Affairs, 1784-1789. The manuscripts and documents include many reports, commissions, and diplomas, as well as a draft copy of THE FEDERALIST Number 5 and Jay's oath of office as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court; also included are manumission documents, and a group of documents from Trinity Church, where his father was a vestryman from 1715 to 1785. The collection includes copies of Jay's letter book as Secretary of State, 10 Oct. 1788-25 Dec. 1792, and of four letters from John Armstrong, 19 June-27 Dec. 1810; and a copy of the pair of silverplated candlesticks from the Treaty of Paris, 3 Sept. 1783, reproduced by the Smithsonian Institution.
