Correspondence, manuscripts, notes, course materials, illustrations, family items, and printed materials of Sherwin. The manuscripts are largely of unpublished material, but are of some published works like THE ENCOMPASSING MIRROR. The majority of the collection consists of Sherwin's notes on various literary and historical topics including among others Dryden, Pope, and Swift. Course materials are from his classes at City College. The illustrations are some of those considered for use in his publications. Family items include college papers by his son James, notebooks kept by his wife, Stella, during a period of mental illness, and Sherwin's reflections upon her condition. The printed materials consist of periodical articles and reviews by Sherwin and reviews of his books.

Eighteen letters of Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, friend of Queen Anne, wife of the great English military commander, and ancestress of Sir Winston Churchill. The letters contain comments on the political events of the day, particularly the Jacobite cause, the building of Blenheim Palace, and family affairs. The letters were the subject of an article"The Duchess Speaks Her Mind" by Dallas Pratt in the "Columbia Library Columns" May 1965, pp. 27-42. There are also letters by Jonathan Swift, 13 May 1740; John Constable, 14 Dec. 1833 and 18 Dec. 1834; George W. Wales, 22 Jan. 1859; and a document signed by Louis XIV, 13 Oct. 1705. In addition, there are nine original photographs of Rupert Brooke, taken in London, 1913, by the American photographer Sherril Schell, as well as a photostatic copy of poems from the Rugby notebook of Rupert Brooke. Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, notes, photographs, and printed materials of James Lowry Clifford, 1901-1979, professor of English, Columbia University. Historical and literary letters and manuscripts collected by Clifford include letters from Samuel Johnson, diaries of Hester Lynch Salusbury Thrale Piozzi and those of her second husband, Gabriel Piozzi; a review of Clifford's book on Mrs. Piozzi and approximately nine drafts of one of Virginia Woolfs last typescripts.
