Correspondence; manuscripts of books, chapters, addresses, lectures, articles, and other writings; clippings and other printed materials relating to Butler's life and career, and memorabilia, ca. 1900-1947. Also, correspondence, 1891-1946, between Butler and presidents of the United States including William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman.

Personal, academic, and legal correspondence, manuscripts, documents, photographs, and memoranda. Among the legal files, there is particular emphasis on labor and welfare law. The files also contain materials about his judicial appointment, the American Law Institute, the Columbia University School of Law, and the Project on International Procedure. Among the major correspondents are: James A. Farley, Arthur J. Goldberg, Philip C. Jessup, Robert F. Kennedy, Harold R. Medina, James A. Pike, and Lionel Trilling

Correspondence, speeches, speech materials, news clippings, subject files, audio and videotapes relating to the professional activity of Arthur Levitt, Jr. The papers and audiovisual material deal primarily with his tenure as the Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (1993-2001), but also contain earlier records, including some materials relating to Levitt's school years at the Polytechnic Preparatory Country Day School and at Williams College, and his work at Hayden Stone, the American Stock Exchange, and the New York Economic Development Corporation, and his advocacy of the National Endowment of the Arts during the 1991-1992 funding controversy. These papers also contain materials relating to his father, Arthur Levitt, Sr., who served for 24 years as New York State Comptroller.

Correspondence, manuscripts, notes, research materals, lectures, speeches, galley proofs, news releases, appointment diaries, photographs, printed materials, audio and video cassettes. The correspondence consists of letters from editors and publishers as well as a selected group of letters from readers reacting to his columns and articles. Among these letters are one or two each from Joseph Alsop, Warren E. Burger, J. William Fulbright, John Kenneth Galbraith and Hubert H. Humphrey. The manuscripts, with corrections, notes and research materials are for his numerous contributions to periodicals, such as the "Letters from.." series in The New Yorker, radio and television scripts, interviews with prominent government officials, such as George Shultz, lectures, speeches, ideas and proposals for books, and an extensive file for his unpublished history of the investment firm, Lehman Brothers Kuhn Loeb, Inc. There is a set of news releases for his column, "Washington Insight" 1965-1984 and for his Los Angeles Times column, 1980-1985. The printed materials include newspaper clippings, articles by Kraft in foreign periodicals and some books from his library. The audio and video cassettes contain interviews with presidents and prime ministers as well as radio and television broadcasts on which Kraft appeared.

This collection consists of letters, manuscripts, documents, clipings, photographs, and printed items. The most significant part of this collection is the letters to Cecile Rose Lehman (Seligman) from her mother, as well as the letters from Harold Lehman to his grandfather. There are interesting items regarding Cecile's education and a variety of items having to do with the extended family. There is a album, compiled by Cecile of celebrated actors and musicials, and a odd volume titled "Thru the Rye with the Harold Lehmans" chronicling the before and after effects of alcohol (humorous).

Robert M. Morgenthau (1919-2019) served as the District Attorney for New York County (the borough of Manhattan) for 35 years (1974-2009) and made a reputation for prosecuting white-collar crime. In this regard, the Papers hold many research files covering such aspects of white-collar crime as money laundering, offshore banking and tax havens. Morgenthau rarely handled a case himself. He delegated prosecutions to key aides in his office of 500 lawyers. Although not comprehensive, the Papers do contain a few files of assignment sheets covering the period (1938-2008). These sheets indicate which bureau each Assistant District Attorney was assigned to each month. The Papers, in turn, do not have any employment information about individual lawyers or the specific cases they worked on while employed in the Manhattan District Attorney's Office under Morgenthau. However, researchers should review "Series VI: Press Releases" and "Series VIII: Statements and Testimonies before Local, State and National Governmental Bodies," in order to gain an understanding of the issues handled by the Manhattan DA office during Robert Morgenthau's tenure.

The General Manuscript Collection is an artificial collection of correspondence, diaries, lecture notes, class work, essays, administrative documents, minutes, and other documents collected by the Rare Book & Manuscript Library. Single items or very small collections are generally classified as part of the general manuscript collection rather than assigned an individual manuscript number. Additionally, small additions to existing RBML manuscript collections may be classified as part of the General Manuscript Collection.
