Robert O. Paxton papers, 1968-2004

15 linear feet
Abstract Or Scope

The Robert O. Paxton Papers include: arranged correspondence featuring exchanges between Paxton and his occasional collaborator and one-time coauthor Michael Marrus; research materials and notes for Vichy France and the Jews (published 1981); and course materials (including lecture notes, syllabi, and exams) for two history courses Paxton taught at Columbia from 1968 to 1995. Georgii Alekseevich Polianskii Papers, 1918-1961

2500 items
Abstract Or Scope

The collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, personal documents, subject files and printed materials. Almost half the correspondence is from Varvara (Vali︠a︡) Shakhovskai︠a︡, his wife, from whom he was divorced in 1932 but whose friendship he enjoyed until his death in 1961. A large portion of the manuscripts is in the form of a diary which, for the years 1919-1920, relates the activities of the Cuirassiers during the Civil War. The subject files deal exclusively with the Cuirassier Regiment and its veterans' organization in emigration. They include minutes, official mailings, regiment songs and poems and copies of the regiment publication, "Vestnik," for the period 1928-1931.

Carnegie Corporation of New York, Series III: Grant Records, 1911-1994

1500 linear feet
Abstract Or Scope

The Corporation awards grants to nonprofit organizations and institutions for projects that are broadly educational in nature and that show promise of having national or international impact. Certain appropriations are made for activities, such as Corporation-led initiatives that are administered by the foundation's officers. The trustees set the overall policies of the foundation and have final authority to approve all grants above $50,000 recommended by the program staff. Grants of $25,000 or less, called discretionary grants, are made upon the approval of the president and are reported to the board; larger discretionary grants, those between $25,000 and $50,000, are also reviewed by a Corporation-wide group, which makes recommendations to the president.
