Book Arts Ephemera collection, 1890-2019
158.5 Linear FeetThese files have been compiled by the Rare Book and Manuscript Library from its origin in 1930 through the present day. The material derives largely from gifts, and the occasional purchase; much of the subject file in particular is made of ephemera included in the American Type Founders, Co. Library, purchased in 1942. Prospectuses and information sent by fine presses and book artists are added to the relevant files in an ongoing fashion. The files cover subjects from the beginning of printing to the current day.
Aleksandr Konstantinovich Shervashidze Papers, 1918-1933
2.5 linear feetThese papers consist of correspondence, manuscripts, documents, art works, printed materials, and a photograph, and relate chiefly to Russian artists and ballet personalities active in France in the 1920s and 1930s. Records of the Parisian World of Art (Mir Iskusstva) group, of which Shervashidze was the president, includes correspondence, documents, an exhibit program, clippings and a photograph of the artists involved. There is correspondence from Lev Bakst, Ivan Bilibin, Sergei Diagilev, Mikhail Larionov, Georgii Lukomskii, and Joan Mirʹo, and one letter each from Nikolai Roerich, and Nataliia Goncharova. There are also many letters from Shervashidze's family in the Soviet Union from the 1920s and 1930s. Illustrative materials by Shervashidze include programs, prints and water colors.

The collection includes original watercolor, pen-and-ink, and pencil illustrations for fifty books by various authors, beginning with Georges Duplaix's TOPSY TURVY CIRCUS (1940), and continuing with Golden Book's Scuffy the Tugboat & Tootles the Train by Gertrude Crampton; Duplaix's The Merry Shipwreck; Kipling's The Jungle Books, and the artist's dummy for The Wheel on the Chimney by Margaret Wise Brown, a Caldecott Honor book. Also included are illustrations for nineteen books by Gergely; advertising and commercial art of the 1940s, political cartoons and carricatures from the 1930s 1940s in Europe and America; designs for greeting cards, posters, and record jackets; and eighteen watercolor drawings for NEW YORKER covers, many of which were published in the 1940s. A selection of manuscripts, correspondence, and printed materials is also included in the collection.
