The Corporation awards grants to nonprofit organizations and institutions for projects that are broadly educational in nature and that show promise of having national or international impact. Certain appropriations are made for activities, such as Corporation-led initiatives that are administered by the foundation's officers. The trustees set the overall policies of the foundation and have final authority to approve all grants above $50,000 recommended by the program staff. Grants of $25,000 or less, called discretionary grants, are made upon the approval of the president and are reported to the board; larger discretionary grants, those between $25,000 and $50,000, are also reviewed by a Corporation-wide group, which makes recommendations to the president. Notes and related materials of Trilling for his biography of Charles Dudley Warner. Included are numerous photostats and typescript copies of Warner's incoming and outgoing correspondence. Also, some miscellaneous notes relating to Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Mark Twain.

Correspondence, manuscripts, notes, course materials, illustrations, family items, and printed materials of Sherwin. The manuscripts are largely of unpublished material, but are of some published works like THE ENCOMPASSING MIRROR. The majority of the collection consists of Sherwin's notes on various literary and historical topics including among others Dryden, Pope, and Swift. Course materials are from his classes at City College. The illustrations are some of those considered for use in his publications. Family items include college papers by his son James, notebooks kept by his wife, Stella, during a period of mental illness, and Sherwin's reflections upon her condition. The printed materials consist of periodical articles and reviews by Sherwin and reviews of his books.

Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, photographs, memorabilia, and printed materials. Correspondence is both professional and personal, relating primarily to Fuld's duties in the New York District Attorney's Office, as a judge in the state and federal courts, and to his civic work for the Jewish Theological Seminary, the City College of New York, New York University, and the Columbia University Law School. Major correspondents include: Thomas E. Dewey, Louis Finkelstein, Herbert Lehman, and Nelson A. Rockefeller. The rest of the collection consists of Fuld's briefs, opinions, memoranda, forms of indictments, appeals cases, reports for the New York State Court of Appeals from his appointment in 1946 through 1973, and manuscripts of his speeches and lectures. The memoranda series deals chiefly with investigations into organized crime. In addition there are biographical materials, memorabilia, and photographs.
