The main portion of the collection is made up of letters, documents, notes, manuscript and typescript articles and speeches, and scrapbooks and notebooks which are contained in 270 envelopes, folders, manuscript boxes, and bundles. Another 153 bundles, boxes, folders, and envelopes are devoted chiefly to clippings, tear sheets, pamphlets, and books and other printed matter. Proofs of the printing plates for one of Mr. Bancroft's works on Carl Schurz are preserved in eleven envelopes. Pictorial material includes two envelopes of photographs, one envelope of photostats, thirty-four photographs, and eighty-five framed photographs, many with manuscript letters by or relating to the subject of the photograph. The collection is rich in the papers and personal correspondence of Frederic Bancroft and includes notes and various other source materials for his books dealing largely with African Americans, the South, the Civil War, Seward, Calhoun, and the life and work of Carl Schurz. Also, a wealth of material by and about Edgar Bancroft (1857-1925), Frederic's brother and U.S. ambassador to Japan.

The files of Curtis Brown, Ltd. literary agency include correspondence with authors, publishers, and other agents and deal with the editing and publishing of trade and textbooks, serial rights, reprints, dramatic rights, translations and foreign rights, promotion and copyright registration. For each author there are contracts, royalty statements, tax statements, and other financial materials. There is also a contract file, including cancellations and related correspondence, from 1914 to 1988. Among the cataloged correspondents are: Louis S. Auchincloss, W.H. The collection consists of the editorial and production archives of Random House, Inc. from its founding in 1925 to the 1990s. The correspondence and editorial files include many of the prominent novelists and short story writers from 20th-century American and European literature: Saul Bellow; Erskine Caldwell; Truman Capote; William Faulkner; Sinclair Lewis; André Malraux; Gertrude Stein and Thornton Wilder. Among the poets there are files for W. H. Auden; Allen Ginsberg; Robinson Jeffers; Robert Lowell; and Stephen Spender. In the area of theater there are files for Maxwell Anderson; Moss Hart; Lillian Hellman; Eugene O'Neill; and Tennessee Williams. Random House transacted business with many fine presses and noted typographers and the archives contain files for Nonesuch Press, Grabhorn Press and Golden Cockerel Press, as wll as for Bruce Rogers, Valenti Angelo, and Edwin, Jane, and Robert Grabhorn.

The papers deal with editorial, financial, and legal aspects of publishing, magazine, theatrical and film rights, and all other personal and professional activities of their American and English clients. Among these clients have been Michael Arlen, Frances Hodgson Burnett, Theodore Dreiser, Ernest Hemingway, Sinclair Lewis, Carson McCullers, Ezra Pound, Ayn Rand, Dorothy Sayers, Gertrude Stein, and Dylan Thomas.
