Jack Beeson papers, 1854-2013

Jack Beeson (1921-2010) was a noted twentieth-century American composer, professor of composition, and the chair of the Columbia University Department of Music from 1968 to 1972. The collection includes scores, correspondence, subject files, scrapbooks, datebooks, drafts of written works, biographical materials, programs, and audio and audiovisual recordings.

This subseries contains documents related to Beeson's activities as a composer, including activities related to such organizations as the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the American Academy in Rome, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), the Pulitzer, and the National Endowment for the Arts; composition projects including completed operas as well as aborted opera conceptions; recommendations; delivered lectures; publications; biographical materials on figures in the arts such as Aaron Copland, Benjamin Britten, and Douglas Moore; and correspondence with colleagues in the arts including Paul Henry Lang, Otto Luening, Douglas Moore, William Saroyan, John Updike, Charles Wuorinen, and others. It is organized alphabetically.

Telford Taylor papers, 1918-1998, bulk 1949-1992

The Telford Taylor Papers collect the work of Telford Taylor as a lawyer, legal scholar, writer, and historian. The documents include Taylor's work in Nuremberg with the International and Nuremberg Military Tribunals, his work within departments created by the New Deal, some of his legal case files (particularly on civil liberties cases), and other professional interests that Taylor had. The collection also contains Taylor's writings including drafts of his books, speeches, interviews, teaching materials, and much of the research behind these pursuits. The genre of materials includes official reports, correspondence, manuscripts, annotated texts and photographs. The collection also contains Taylor's research materials in the form of annotations, notes, and clippings.

Douglas Stuart Moore (1893-1969) was an American composer, educator, and author. His best known works include the operas The Devil and Daniel Webster (1937-1939), The Ballad of Baby Doe (1953-1956), and Giants in the Earth (1949-1950), which won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1951. The papers include clippings, correspondence, course and lecture materials, librettos, photographs, programs, publicity materials, recordings, and scores.

Nicolai Berezowsky papers, 1893-1954

Letters to and from Nicolai Berezowsky documenting his career and covering his development as violinist, conductor, and composer. The profession is well represented in the correspondence, with 63 letters from David Diamond, 22 from Serge Koussevitsky, 72 from Nicolai Lopatnikoff, and 31 from Eugene Ormandy; others in the collection are Leon Barzin, Aaron Copland, Henry Cowell, Vladimir Golschmann, Eugene Goosens, Alex Grechaninov, Ernest Hutcheson, Douglas Moore, Paul Nordoff, Wallingford Riegger, Artur Rodzinski, Roger Sessions, Harold Spivacke, Leopold Stokowski, and Olga Samaroff Stokowski. Organizations, such as the WPA music program, League of Composers, Juilliard School of Music, and the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers, are represented. There are also 15 volumes of music scores.

Serge Prokofiev Archive, 1917-2012

Serge Prokofiev (1891–1953) was a Russian and Soviet composer, pianist and conductor, and seminal figure in the history of twentieth-century music. The Serge Prokofiev Archive (SPA) contains 58 original music manuscripts and over 10,000 letters and documents primarily from 1918-1936, the years Prokofiev spent in the West. The SPA also includes an expansive collection of music manuscript copies, published scores, concert programs, scholarly books and articles, photographs, and audio and video material, making it the premier research collection for studying Prokofiev's life, work and legacy.
